Tracy Durkan, LCPC
I completed a Master’s in Counseling Psychology at the Family Institute at Northwestern University in 2013. After graduating I began my career working as an outpatient therapist at a community mental health center. Starting in Fall 2014, I then spent several years working as a staff therapist in Partial Hospitalization Programming and Intensive Outpatient Programming. After realizing I value long term therapeutic work, I joined Midwest Counseling & Diagnostics in Summer 2019.
My training at Northwestern provided a foundation in psychodynamic therapy. My experience working in higher levels of care provided me with additional training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness. I believe our past history influences our present thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. A combination of increasing our self awareness and trying new approaches supports us in creating change.
I work with clients addressing concerns related to life transitions, anxiety, grief, chronic health conditions, stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury recovery, relationship challenges, burnout, work challenges, and depression. I have experience working with other health professionals on their own mental health journeys. I enjoy working with “overachievers” and “people pleasers”. I think life can exist without constant striving.
I aim to be nonjudgmental in my role as a therapist. My goal is not to “fix” you. I don’t think humans are broken. I also don’t think therapy is about getting the “A” or the “excellent”. I approach therapy as an ongoing collaborative process. I view my role as helping you decide what narrative you choose to write for yourself. I will support and challenge you in experimenting with new patterns and viewpoints.
Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy running, weight lifting, and my dog Waffles. Originally from the east coast, I have years of experience in practicing radical acceptance of the unpredictability of seasons and weather.
I believe psychotherapy is a space that can assist us in slowing down; a space where we can be authentic, sort through our present, learn from our past, determine what we value today, and build new patterns. I respect the humility and courage that it takes to start therapy. I am licensed to practice in IL, AZ, MI, and MA. Please feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to schedule a brief 10-15 minute phone conversation to discuss how it might feel working together.
