Biography: Emem is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) has extensive experience working with community mental health and social work, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient (OP) levels of care. Emem has provided counseling and advocacy services to homeless victims of domestic abuse, undocumented women and children, political asylees/refugees. Emem has engaged in social activism to provide equitable access to housing, financial, immigration, medical, legal, mental health, and addiction services with marginalized communities and populations, while actively engaging in advocacy work (legal, immigration, medical, housing, safety, financial, mental health, addictions), and counseling. Emem works from a Health at Every Size (HAES) and humanist framework, observing individuals as a whole. Emem believes in the power of healing through promoting self-awareness, autonomy, and empowerment. When it comes to the war against body discrimination and inclusivity, Emem believes in working to enhance radical body acceptance through promoting size-acceptance, end weight discrimination, and work against the cultural obsession with thinness and weight loss. Emem believes in concepts such as radical self-love, radical-acceptance, free will, self-efficacy, self-compassion, and self-actualization in order to help individuals fulfill their potential and maximize their well being.
Emem utilizes a variety of evidence-based therapies including the Person Centered approach to foster the trust building process and increase client autonomy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), and Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). Focusing on the present Emem explores goals and objectives with clients, as well as conditions and actions that inhibit clients’ ability to achieve these aspirations, and make space for stability and forward movement. Within the therapeutic environment Emem will provide compassion and emotional support when exploring clients’ presenting concerns, while at the same time encouraging and challenging each person to be open to, and make changes in their lives that will support personal growth, and cultivate contentment, joy, and fulfillment.
